ConsumerLab.com, one of the most respected independent labs in the US has just finished testing Omega-3 fish oil supplements from several major companies to test the supplements for levels of mercury, lead and PCB’s. Among the 50 companies who’s products were tested, were several direct sales companies, who’s products held their own against the big companies (OpTree News - Eniva, OpTree News - USANA, OpTree News - Isagenix).

The products studied had Omega -3- Fatty acids that ranged from 16 mg to over 1,000mg per serving. All of the products studied were found to have the accurate amount of fatty acids they claimed to have without any signs of spoilage. With the exception of one product, that released the oil to soon, the supplements were found to be effective, and live up to the claims made by the manufacturing company.

Among the brands studied were sever direct selling nutritional companies including, Eniva, USANA, Shaklee, and Pharmanex.

Sales of fish oil supplements have grown almost 500% percent since 2000 when the FDA allowed those products to claim that the omega-3 oils EPA and DHA may help reduce the risk of heart disease. Sales reached almost $500 million in 2008.

“Because of how they are made, fish oil supplements are a great alternative to fish as a source of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. You can easily get a month’s supply of a good supplement for less than the price of a pound of fish – and without contaminants,” said Tod Cooperman, M.D.,

ConsumerLab.com’s president. Dr. William Obermeyer, ConsumerLab.com’s Vice President of Research, explained that contaminants are unlikely in properly made fish oil products because, “The species of fish used to make oil supplements are typically smaller and not as likely to accumulate toxins, and the oils are distilled — which removes contaminants.”

The report done by ConsumerLab included fifty products that were either selected by the Lab or tested at the request of the product’s company.

Results are available on the ConsumerLab website. In the next few months look for more reviews of products containing melatonin, Vitamin A, D, and K as well as menopause supplements and nutrition bars. I’m sure the reviews will include many products manufactured and sold by various direct sales companies. These products have done a great job holding their own against many of the bigger companies, and the test results help add to their legitimacy as effective and safe products.

Health and Wellness Company, Eniva has just received certification from ConsumerLab.com for the safety and quality of one of its products, Efacor. Efacor is a Omega-3 dietary supplement that helps support a healthy heart, brain development, joint health and improved mood. Eniva has been a leader in safe and effective liquid nutrition products since 1998.

ConsumerLab.com has been recognized in the past for ensuring the quality and safety of many nutritional and wellness products ( USANA BiOmega, Isagenix Omega-3 Supplement) . ConsumerLab also tests the efficacy of the product to ensure that claims made by the company are met. The ConsumerLab “Approved Quality” seal means that the product has gone through rigorous testing and meets the high standards required by the independent testing company for a product to bear the seal.

Responding to the approval, Eniva Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Benjamin Baechler said, “With so much emphasis on heart health today, consumers are looking for Omega-3 products. With Efacor, the consumer is not only getting the supplement they need, they are getting a product that is produced with the values of exceptional quality, safety and effectiveness.

With so much focus on non regulated dietary and wellness supplements, it is becoming increasingly necessary for companies to prove that their products are not only effective, but safe as well. The demand for supplements has increased steadily over the years and as that desire grows, so does the need for more rigorous testing. Eniva expects in the future that all of their products will be tested to ensure they too meet the high standards of ConsumerLab.

Nutraceutical company, Eniva has just released test results on their VIBE Health Supplement, which was conducted by the world renowned Linus Pauling Micronutrient Research Institute at Oregon State University. The research showed that the VIBE supplement possessed DNA protective anti-mutagenic activity for human cells. The study was part of a continuing study to determine the effects of the supplement on the human body.

In layman’s terms, the newest findings show that Eniva’s health supplement can help protect cells within human DNA from mutating and causing harm to the body.

While Eniva is excited about the findings, they are cautious not to read to much into it as the study into the supplement is still continuing. Chief Scientific Officer for Eniva Corporation, Dr. Benjamin Baechler, released a statement about the findings saying, “We must be careful not to generalize these results beyond the study findings. What we can say for certain is these results further demonstrate the ability of the VIBE nutraceutical to help support healthy and normal functioning of human cells, even under very stressful physiologic situations.”

This study was funded by the Eniva corporation to examine the health benefits and effects on the body of all of their nutritional products. The lab will continue to study the products to determine their safety, efficacy and effectiveness. While the details of the study are way to scientific for me to understand or explain to you, the results and explanations of the study can be found on the Eniva website.

This is a smart move on Eniva’s part especially with what is going on today in the nutraceutical an dietary supplement world. It’s a great idea to study all of their products to ensure that all statements made about their products are verifiable and that the products are safe for human consumption.
